The Real Conservatives and Conservatism

Source:The National Interest- arguing that William F. Buckley (founder of National Review and Firing Line With William F. Buckley) created the conservative movement in America.

"Consider these accomplishments: author of over 50 best-selling books of nonfiction and fiction that introduced the CIA hero Blackford Oakes to the world; writer of 5,600 newspaper columns totaling 4.5 million words in eloquent defense of the conservative paradigm; host of the weekly TV program “Firing Line” that for 33 years and 1,504 programs enabled him to eviscerate the leading liberals in the land."

The actual definition of Conservative, is someone who believes in conserving. So it's easy to see why there isn't any official definition of Conservative, at least in a political sense, even though I believe I have the best one and the accurate definition of Conservative and conservatism, at least in an American political and constitutional sense.

When I think of political Conservatives, I think of people who believe in conserving the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights and all the guaranteed, constitutional and individual rights that grant every American those basic constitutional rights.

So if you want to call my definition of Conservative, Conservative-Libertarian or Classical-Conservative, you can do that, but I don't look at Conservatives as people who hold fundamentalist cultural, religious, racial, and ethnic beliefs to the point that they believe government should enforce those beliefs on everyone else. Constitutional conservatism is not the same thing as nationalism or theocracy. And this page is about Constitutional Conservatives and conservatism, not nationalism or populism.
