The American New Left

Source:Wikipedia- "A demonstrator offers a flower to military police at an anti-Vietnam War protest in Arlington, Virginia, 21 October 1967." The antiwar wing of the American New-Left.

"The New Left was a broad political movement mainly in the 1960s and 1970s consisting of activists in the Western world who campaigned for a broad range of social issues such as civil and political rights, feminism, gay rights, abortion-rights, gender roles and drug policy reforms.[1] Some see the New Left as an oppositional reaction to earlier Marxist and labor union movements for social justice that focused on dialectical materialism and social class, while others who used the term see the movement as a continuation and revitalization of traditional leftist goals.[2][3][4]

Some who self-identified as "New Left"[5] rejected involvement with the labor movement and Marxism's historical theory of class struggle,[6] although others gravitated to their own takes on established forms of Marxism, such as the New Communist movement (which drew from Maoism) in the United States or the K-Gruppen (de) in the German-speaking world. In the United States, the movement was associated with the anti-war college-campus protest movements, including the Free Speech Movement."

The reason why we have the term New-Left and the reasons why we've have a New-Left political movement at least since the mid 1960s (if not the 1940s with people like Henry Wallace) is because up until 1965 Americans on the Left were Progressives, but not Communists or Socialists.

The Center-Left was a political movement of Progressives (Democratic and Republican, up until the 1970s) or who believed in America and what America is supposed to be for all Americans, but who also believed in progress and always working to make America better, but not to try to replace our form of government with some type of socialist state, or something.

By the early and mid 1960s with Baby Boomers coming of age we had a new generation of Americans who weren't satisfied with Progressive versus Conservative and Liberal and wanted to go further and create their own political movement and political philosophy. Words like socialist and communist or socialism and communism tend not to scare young adults (regardless of their generation) and these young Americans read up on Socialists and Communists and decided that's who they liked and respected and in some cases that's who they wanted to be ideologically.

The New-Left in America is a collection of Socialists (in some cases social democratic) and Communists, who at the very least don't like what America is what it stands for and want this country to be something different. More socialist and lest individualistic and have been with us in this country for almost 60 years now. This page is about Socialists and Communists in America and I hope you're interested in it.
